Maynard 'Defends' His Title This Weekend

This coming weekend at UFC 136, we see the longly anticipated match up between UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie 'The Answer' Edgar facing off against 10-0-1 challenger Gray 'The Bully' Maynard.

In the first closely contested match up, the fight went to a split decision draw. However in my personal opinion I had the fight scored it 48-46 in favour of the challeneger. Round one was clearly a 10-8 round with Maynard dropping Edgar with a left hand and unleashing a series of ground and pound and flurry of punches on the feet,however was unable to finish the fight, were if picked his punches wisely, would have easily finished Edgar.

The next for rounds were extremly close, yet I had Edgar winning Rounds 2 & 4 with Maynard winning Rounds 3 & 5. The fight was a lot different to what many fans expected: with both having a strong background in wrestling as both had great success at NCAA Div 1 college level glory. However, the third and final fight in the trilogy will be much what we expected the first time.

I believe it's Maynards fight to lose this Saturday. Gray wants to get the win the title and will go back to what he knows: Wrestling. His Wrestling is much better than Edgars despite them both being arguarbly the two best in the division with 'The Bully' being an NCAA Div 1 National Champion. Although Gray's boxing is not as technical and crisp as Edgars, the showed in the first fight he has the ability to close the distance and catch Edgar.

Additionally, Edgar has fought Maynard on two occasions and hasn't beaten him so what changed things? Although 'The Answer' is ever-improving so is Maynard. Although Edgar has the heart of a champion, he will be outsized and outstrengthed by Gray and will become frustrated after Maynard lands takedown after takedown.

Expect a gritty, wrestlers performance from Maynard and expect him to 'defend his title' for the first time which will set up a title fight with Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez
